Can You Ever Be Too Diligent?

Last year, I received some verbal feedback that said I was too diligent.

I actually laughed out loud — partly from surprise, partly because… is that even a thing?

Being told you’re too diligent feels a bit like being told you’re too kind, too reliable, or too good at turning up on time. It’s feedback that tries to sound constructive, but really it just reveals something interesting about the workplace around you.

Diligence isn’t flashy.

It’s not loud.

It doesn’t need applause or a certificate.

Diligence is the quiet heartbeat behind everything that runs smoothly. It’s the person who remembers the details, follows through on promises, and finishes the job properly even when no one’s watching. You know… those small, unglamorous habits that hold entire organisations together.

So can you be too diligent?

Let’s explore the possibilities:

1. You might be “too diligent” for someone who prefers shortcuts.

When your standard exposes other people’s shortcuts, it can feel uncomfortable — not for you, but for them.

2. You might be “too diligent” for a system that’s gotten used to doing the bare minimum.

Sometimes workplaces adjust to mediocrity without even noticing. A diligent person disrupts that equilibrium simply by showing up as themselves.

3. You might be “too diligent” if people are used to you carrying more than your share.

And instead of wondering if they should step up, they wonder why you’re stepping so far.

4. Or… maybe you’re not too diligent at all.

Maybe you’re just consistent. Maybe you’re values-led. Maybe you were raised to finish what you start and treat people with respect. That’s not “too much” — that’s called integrity.

Diligence isn’t the problem. Misalignment is.

When your level of care doesn’t match the culture you’re in, it stands out. Not because it’s wrong — but because it’s rare.

Some people will celebrate it.

Others will misunderstand it.

A few might even resent it.

But the world runs on diligent people. The quiet achievers. The ones who aren’t chasing gold medals — just doing the right thing because it feels right.

So no, you can’t be too diligent.

But you can be in an environment that doesn’t know what to do with your diligence.

And that’s a reflection of the environment — not of you.

Keep being steady.

Keep caring.

Keep doing the small things well.

Someone out there is inspired by your diligence even if they never say a word.
