SISU - The Quiet Strength That Changes Everything

There’s a Finnish word I keep coming back to lately: Sisu.

It doesn’t have a direct translation, but it’s often described as deep inner strength, resilience, and perseverance — especially when things feel hard and you’d be forgiven for stopping.

Not the loud, chest-beating kind of strength.

Not hustle, grind, or pushing through at all costs.

Sisu is quieter than that.

And far more sustainable.

When Motivation Runs Out

Most of us can keep going when life feels good.

When energy is high, goals feel exciting, and progress is visible.

But what about the moments when:

You feel tired or uncertain

The plan didn’t work the way you hoped

Life throws a curveball you didn’t ask for

You’re questioning yourself, your direction, or your capacity

Sisu is what shows up after motivation leaves the room.

It’s the inner voice that says,

“I’ll take one more step — even if it’s a small one.”

Sisu Isn’t Forcing — It’s Staying

This is where Sisu often gets misunderstood.

It’s not about pushing harder. It’s not about ignoring your feelings. It’s not about being tough for the sake of it.

Sisu is about staying:

Staying present with discomfort

Staying aligned with your values

Staying committed to yourself, even when things wobble

It allows space for rest and resilience.

Compassion and responsibility.

You can feel unsure and still move forward.

You can feel tired and still be strong.

Both can exist at once.

How Sisu Shows Up in Coaching

In my coaching work, Sisu appears all the time — often without people realising that’s what they’re tapping into.

It looks like:

Someone choosing clarity instead of avoidance

Someone being honest about what’s not working

Someone taking responsibility without self-blame

Someone slowing down so they can move forward more intentionally

Coaching isn’t about fixing you — because you’re not broken. It’s about creating the space to reconnect with your inner strength, your direction, and your ability to choose differently.

That’s Sisu in action.

You Don’t Need to Be Fearless

One of the most powerful things about Sisu is this: You don’t need to be fearless. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to rush.

You just need to be willing to take the next right step.

Sometimes that step is bold. Sometimes it’s gentle. Sometimes it’s simply pausing long enough to listen to yourself again.

An Invitation

If you’re standing at a crossroads — personally, professionally, emotionally — and you know something needs to shift, you don’t have to do it alone.

Coaching is a space to build clarity, reconnect with your inner strength, and move forward with intention — not pressure.

Quiet strength counts. Steady steps matter. And you already have more Sisu than you think.
